Adivasis rally in Kolkata against Deucha Panchami coal mine, demand end to evictions

Kolkata saw a large-scale protest today as Moolnivasi Oikya Manch and Paschim Banga Adivasi Adhikar Manch organized a march against the Deucha Panchami coal mining project. Protesters assembled near Sealdah Station South Section before marching to Dharamtala, demanding an immediate cancellation of the mining project. They alleged that the government was forcibly evicting Adivasi communities in the name of development, leading to large-scale displacement and loss of traditional land.

According to the protesters, the proposed coal mining project would destroy forests, water bodies, and agricultural land, severely impacting the local ecosystem and livelihoods. They emphasized that the region is home to a significant Adivasi population that relies on traditional means of sustenance, including farming and forest produce. One protester stated, "We will not allow our land, water, and forests to be sacrificed for so-called development."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called Deucha Panchami India’s largest coal mining project, stating that it would create thousands of jobs and bring economic growth to the region. However, protesters argued that the mining project would come at the cost of widespread environmental destruction and displacement of indigenous communities. They claimed that forced evictions have already begun, leading to protests across various Adivasi regions.

The protesters also highlighted concerns over air and water pollution from coal mining, warning of its potential impact on public health and local biodiversity. They demanded legal protection for the Adivasi land and called for the revocation of the mining proposal. Activists stated that they have submitted formal objections to the government and will continue demonstrations until the project is canceled.

Security was tightened in key areas of Kolkata during the protest, with heavy police deployment along the march route. No reports of violence were recorded. Protesters vowed to intensify their movement in the coming days if their demands are not met. State authorities have yet to issue a formal response regarding the protest or the future of the Deucha Panchami project.
